2009 Meetings
Thursday 22 October 2009
Web Development Technologies
This meeting will feature talks by Mel Pedley and Mike Burton, both AICS members, on web development technologies.
The talk by Mike Burton will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to JBoss Seam
A framework that brings together EJB3 (for data) and JSF (web presentation logic)- Partial Page Rendering
Speed up web-applications by only re-rendering specific components, rather than having to reload the whole page. This considerably improves interactive features such as linked master / detail dropdown lists.- Ajax (or Asynchronous Javascript and XML if you don't like ETLA's!)
Open a direct conversation between the browser and the application, allowing Javascript code on a web-page to call methods on the server. Likewise the server can send information to the browser whenever it likes, rather than having to wait for the user to refresh the page. Seam also relieves the developer of messy low-level Javascript work. The net result is a web application with the sort of responsiveness that used to be the preserve of locally running programs, allowing features such as real-time progress bars.Mike has been developing internet / intranet applications and databases for the last 5 years, and prior to that networked client-server systems for many years.
The talk by Mel Pedley will cover the practical issues that web designers need to understand in order to help their clients reap the benefits of accessible web design. As well as examining the needs of different user groups, we will look some of the most common access barriers (and how to avoid them) and how accessible techniques can improve SEO.
The talk will also introduce W3C's accessibility guidelines; PAS 78: 'Guide to Good Practice in Commissioning Accessible Websites' and the upcoming BSi 8878 standard.
Mel Pedley has worked within the web design sector for over 10 years and specialises in accessible web design. She is an administrator within the Guild of Accessible Web Designers; an approved Technical Assessor for the Shaw Trust's Web Accreditation Scheme and a member of Team Access at Accessites.org.
The presentations will be followed by a finger buffet and the chance to network with other AICS members face to face.
